bring on UCONN
yeah right uconn has them beat maybe next year. but they do look good though.
Tennessee has made huge strides from their 22-11 season. They could give UConn a challenge if they play together for forty minutes, especially with Tennessee’s depth. UConn, however, plays hard, together, and efficiently. Of my years of watching ladyvols basketball, the 1998 championship team played with the efficiency presently evident in UConn’s game.
I agree that Tennessee is probably next year’s team to beat, but I never count out a Pat Summitt team.
I like what you said about the intensity of the 1998 team compared to UConn today. Semeka Randall was a fearsome defender as was Tamika Catchings. Another poster here mentioned UConn’s “overwhelming defense.” This is the trademark of a winner, and this LV team doesn’t have it. Last year they were awful, this year Coach Summitt has dragged them, with various forms of recrimination, into a better year. They are now a modestly competent team. But so is Stanford, ND, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and any number of other teams comprising the horde of UConn wannabes.
The fact is, UConn has for the last 12 years or so relentlessly pursued the goal of usurping UT as the premier program in womens college basketball, and they have succeded. How? with a clear goal and viciously effective recruiting.
( I have been losing posts due to the Malaysian internet connection I am tied to, so I will continue in another post)
To continue:
Complaining about a nefariously conducted recruitment here and there will not affect UConn’s efforts, as Gino(Geno?) is way to smart to risk the NCAA’s wrath. UT must recruit as effectively or the LV’s will remain behind, as UConn will continue to remain at the highest level of recruiting effectiveness.Gino is young and he will be getting among the best players for many years to come.
Looking back over the last few years, Coach Summitt has found herself in the position of removing names from jerseys, banishing the team to the intramural locker room, and yanking players for uninspired play and unacceptable mistakes, resulting in a merry-go-round of lineups. There is no excuse for veterens to be dribbling and mishandling the ball into turnovers, and even the youngest player can show a 100% effort. Coach Summitt has to work entirely too hard to get wins out of this team.
Why? Because the talent and heart are just not there. If you are going to kill a Great White, you need Killer Whales–nothing less will do. The LV’s are maybe two years of hard recruiting to be on UConn’s level.
Coach Summitt will always recruit with honor and within the rules. She just cannot take no for an answer.
As Dale Carnegie once said, “Cooperate with the inevitable.”
Thank you Charles.
All these repsonses indicate the ladyvols have dedicated fans who want nothing less than success for the ladyvols.
Charles, I think many share our concern about the ladyvols’ inconsistent intensity. Coach Summitt has often lamented this team’s inconsistency, trying as best she and her staff know to get this team to own the tradition of excellence they represent.
We cheer their wins and laud the winningest coach in college basketball.
If I read Coach Summitt’s intensity, given her winning record, she is not merely interested in wins; she’s interested in how her team plays. She wants talent to shine through consistent improvement, no more turn-off-turn-on effort or close games resulting from sloppy playing, hence forcing disciplinary practices rather than hard practices that capitalize intensity, effort, and competition she expects every game.
The 1997 championship team, 29-10, lacked talent only. Effort, intensity, determination, competition, pride (for Tennessee tradition), fortitude, steadfastness, execution, and inspiration (lots of tears too) catapulted them to the top.
Coach Summitt knows what it takes to win championships. She knows, indeed. Her players must manifest her knowledge.
uconn is a great team but if a uconn tennessee matchup comes up this year its going to be about how well tennessee guards play against uconns overwhelming defense. i believe that if tina charles or maya moore filed out tennessee would have a better chance of beating them.
good luck tennessee!
If we are going to talk about UCONN on this page, then let me throw up first. holla! But for realz, our 1st half of this game, if this would of ben anybody else, we would of ben down bad at halftime, I just can’t believe we came out like this, but the 2nd half, if we play like that EVERY game and the WHOLE game no matter WHO, Tennessee CAN compete, and its ALL about where you put yourself at towards the end of the game becuase if thier is 3 mins left and your up or down by 10….you all know its anybody’s game. keep it up vols!
Who cares about Geno (the jerk), Pat Summitt has more class than Geno will ever think about having. Why don’t he go coach a mens team if he is so great? Pat Summitt is and will always be the greatest coach in womens college basketball. GO VOLS !!!!!
